Actually British Columbia is very beautiful. But clearly their hockey fans are uncool people.
Or rather, their hockey fans are easily inciteable after a crushing defeat in their most beloved past-time.
I live in Vancouver, and I had a feeling, shared by quite a number of people as I discovered, that regardless of whether the hockey team won or lost, there was going to be bad shit going down. I thought about going down and having a look around (the last picture is about a 25-30 minute walk from where I live), but the last time I decided to gawk at a riot was Dublin in 2006, and I got smoked in the side of the head with a teargas canister, which I did not enjoy.
A good few of my friends went down to have a gander, or to make sure people they knew got out safely, and they saw people with gas maks, goggles, crowbars, etc., milling around in the crowds before anything approaching a riot had actually started. There were a good few people out there who had made plans to start shit that night. There’s also a lot of people that are just generally angry, due to a combination of a struggling economy, a provincial government regarded as being ineffectual and corrupt, and a federal government that’s about as detached from the west coast as Rush Limbaugh is from your average Ethiopian. Then there’s the fact that a Vancouver team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup in 96 years (and counting), and watching them fall apart the way they did was painful to watch, even for a non-hockey fan like me.
So we wound up with a small group of people who intended to instigate some violence, surrounded by a large crowd of generally pissed off people who just saw their dream of winning a championship for the first time in living memory die an embarrassingly painful death. Oh, and alcohol. Lotsa that. Anyone who didn’t see that violence and disorderly conduct was inevitable is either lying, an idiot, or both, and yet everyone’s happily bought into “We couldn’t have foreseen it” as the police department’s excuse for why they didn’t have enough cops in the area until it was too late.
I guess where I’m going with this is that almost everyone saw the riot as a near-inevitability, but any chance of it being stopped was lost due to the ineffectiveness, incompetence, or corruption of those with the power to do so, yet those same people are being exonerated, and drunk teenagers who think fire is awesome are being demonized. And that’s bullshit.
Christ, that’s just begging for a TL;DR, isn’t it?

Now being British it is easy to twiddle my moustache and condemn these hockey thugs for such unruly behaviour, after all – the only reason a Brit would riot is because of university price inflation or an increase in penny farthing tax.
But maybe these riots weren’t all about the hockey – mayeb it was partly BECAUSE Vancouver is such a nice place to live, you have all the angsty teens – watching other nations rebel against their corrupt governments – and all these kids have is first world problems. We see people starving in other nations, the attrocities going on in the congo, financial collapse all around – and all they can worry about is how their pretzels are making them too thirsty. I do believe in the collective unconsious – and I think these riots were a part of that.
Now what fascinates me, is the people that rebelled against the rebels… those dudes that tried to protect Vancouver are automatic heroes. Why? Because they went against the mob. But then if someone rebels against the rebels that are rebelling from the rebels, are they good or bad? Where does it all end??????????

Again, if someone broke into my house, apartment, car; intoxicated or not, they would likely have possible lethal force used against them in a controlled manor, such as a controlled pair to center mass. As supposed by the Penna. House and Senate and sitting on the Governor’s desk, which he as said he would sign.

Additionally, insurance costs money; this kind of thing raises the cost of insurance, which raises the costs of goods and services, not to mention the time lost to the employer, wages lost to the employee, and waste of tax payer money, increased cost to the tax payer because people choose to act in an uncivilized manor.
A Police car destroyed. What does that cost to replace, including radios, lights, equipment? 60,000? 80,000? No, this is unacceptable. The officer responsible for that car had better be in the ICU, the morgue, or he would be looking for a job if I was on the City council. His job is to protect personal and public property. For shame.

Because universal rights extend to both the criminal and the victim.
Also, the penalty for property damage has not yet been risen to the level capital execution, so why don’t you calm the fuck down. Rioters get arrested, charged, and usually bailed out with lengthy probations (and their lives are shittier for having this kind of crap on their record). Also, downtown property is usually insured, because of crap like this.
If you want to bitch about wanton property damage the police aren’t doing enough about, read up on Penn State’s besieged residents. Kids regularly pissing/shitting in their yards or just doing the break-in/fall asleep thing.
