i dont believe there are any extra terrestrial life forms. i used to, but after critically thinking about it, i no longer do.
on the off chance they do exist, i think the distances to our solar system are too great to overcome by any kind of lifeform.
if there are all these advanced lifeforms out there, some of them would be using the electromagnetic spectrum to communicate with each other, and we would have picked up something by now.
I agree. For years, I’ve been a proponent of the Rare Earth Hypothesis. When you actually consider all the contributing factors, especially in the last ten years when we’ve been able to observe other solar systems, the odds of intelligent life somewhere else in the galaxy is near zero.
Well, judging by statistics, it would be impossible for there not to be aliens.
Only thing is that they are so far away that by the time anyone ever discovers our space junk, the human race (and probably earth too) will be long gone.
Imagine… if we were to be discovered at all, the only thing that would be left to be discovered would be our discarded debris floating aimlessly through space.
“Well, judging by statistics, it would be impossible for there not to be aliens.”
Fuck the what ?!?!
Statistics; I go to a beach and weigh every grain of sand/rock. Some weigh a fraction of a gram. Some weigh upto 2 KG. According to my measurements the average rock/grain weighs 0.5 grams. In all likelihood there is not one single specimen that actually weighs 0.5 grams. Its just bullshit.
“Space junk”
Hehe you said junk.

I’ve had the ‘pleasure’ of knowing some of the twists who work for the SETI program. And I use the word twit loosely, some are very good when it comes to their field, sorta like an autistic child who can do amazing things in one very narrow field but is a complete idiot in everything else and has nothing in the common sense department.
A few problems with their hyposthis
Those aliens they’re looking for would needed to been broadcasting in the frequencies that SETI is searching, and it would have had to happen a loooong time in the past, so long ago that it is now reaching earth. The energy from those transmissions would have to be soooo damn powerful they could reach earth and it would of have to be transmitted in the direction of earth. Now for those who don’t understand, It really doesn’t take a lot of power to transmit very directed signal at a source like the do with satellites, but then again they are aimed at the earth and only a few miles away, not hundreds of billions of miles away.
Now this window of transmission that we would be looking at, if we model on the only example we have is less than 100 years. We’ve changed how we transmit, from analog to digital. The technology we used has changed and with the internet will most likely change yet again and we’ll go ‘dark’ soon except for very precisely directed beams to satellites who beam it back to earth, not into space.
So timing wise, you’re talking few hundred million years ago an alien race transmitted signals out into space at a huge power wattage exactly in out direction. And someone here was listening. I believe you will have more chance of winning the big prize in the lottery 4 times in a row than finding anything thru SETI.
This is a great chart. It shows what a waste of good money and resources SETI is and how it could be used to do something more valuable, like be spent on defense to kill people who interfere with our corporate goals, or maybe deforest some place with species that only exist there, or something entirely useful like strip mining some mineral from a enviromentally sensitive spot on the planet.
By the time ET’s do show up, we’re gonna look like a street wino asking for a handout.

What if the aliens are REALLY big then it isn’t so far, right? And maybe they are just lazy.
As Calvin said;
“The surrest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us”.
What if multiple alien civilizations have already visited, but were so small they got eaten by a dog?
I think it’s been pretty well established that if there is life in outer space it’s nowhere close to us. What’s the point?

Dunno how to confirm or disprove your thesis, but you are right on saying that money spent in SETI is money not used to fuck up thing the more.
We should launch a few Nimitz’s on random trajectories, like bricks through hypothetical aliens’ windows.
yeah, t’ain’t no aliens. we would have evidence by now. best to not waste more money on a glorified snipe-hunt.
