Another fight won via Steven Seagal patented front kick. Makes you wonder if MMA was around when martial arts actors like Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Van Damme and Seagal were in their prime how well they would have done.
Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris were both in their prime at the same time. they actually fought each other in the Bruce Lee film…RETURN OF THE DRAGON.
EPIC FIGHT ! ! ! !
A 13 Dan Bujinkan dude moved into town and came by our dojo a month ago. We weren’t impressed, and he had a bad attitude. Their everywhere, in every art and all over the planet.
Puulaahi was right, the front kick is one of the most basic moves in martial arts. The reason everyone is freaking out is a front kick knockout in MMA is relatively unheard of, for several reasons.
The first is that MMA fighters tend to be a very conservative bunch, and they gravitate towards high percentage moves. High percentage moves are moves that are successful a high percentage of the time, as the name implies. MMA fighters are hesitant to throw something that is not guaranteed to work. That’s why you see mostly very basic punches and kicks, and not crazy flying tornado kicks.
Another thing to consider is MMA fighters are fighting other martial artists. They’re fighting trained guys who know what to look for and how to defend themselves. Consequently, the list of techniques that work is smaller, and those techniques that do work do so less frequently.
I’m digressing here, but this also leads to one of the other complaints about MMA. Some martial artists claim MMA fighters have sloppy technique. What they don’t understand is when two people of a similar skill level fight they’re basically going to neutralize each other. The only time you’re going to see some display of fancy moves work is when there is a discrepancy in skill and physical ability of the people fighting, such as a trained versus an untrained person.
Kicks above the waste are uncommon in MMA also because of the grappling element. Higher kicks tend to telegraph more and open more opportunities for takedowns. Half (or more) of the strategy of an MMA fighter is controlling where the fight takes place, because the fighter who can control that usually wins the fight. Therefore fighters are less likely to leave openings for takedowns.
Basically speaking, simple beats flashy.
Now on to the kicks themselves.
Silva and Machida both threw a front kick, but they were both mechanically different. Silva’s was actually similar to the front kick in Capoeira, and Machida’s was similar to what is used in Karate. This makes sense, since they both have backgrounds in those respective arts.
Silva and Machida say they learned the kick from Seagal. If they say that, who am I to judge? They both knew the technique beforehand, for sure. There’s always room for improvement though, even on basic technique.
There’s also a language barrier, since both of them speak little English, so most of the information we get comes through an interpreter. So it’s hard to really get the full picture.
As for Seagal…well…he’s Seagal. As far as skill goes, we don’t really have any idea how good he is. All accounts of his ability are just rumor and hearsay. I’ve heard rumors that say he’s incompetent, and some that say that he is a bad ass. The only consistent thing I’ve heard is he’s a monstrous douche, and I tend to believe that.
Keep in mind that Machida and Silva are extremely eccentric people who are prone to erratic behavior. It’s really hard to tell what’s going through their heads. They could be training with Seagal legitimately, or they could be trolling all of us.
It’s just speculation, but I tend to think they’re trolling the martial arts world. Both of them have a very weird sense of humor. I’ve met Anderson Silva, and I can say the dude is fuckin’ bizarre. He’ll be really quiet one second, and then he’ll start laughing and jumping around, and then go silent again. I swear to god I thought I saw him muttering at a plant for a second.
I like Machida, only because he has a slightly different style then everyone else in the UFC. Personally I prefer K-1, but I don’t really watch much fighting anymore. Basically descending into tradition and knowledge within my own art for now. Plus busy right now.
I too see Seagal as a douchebag, but I enjoy this video very much. You may too.
1. We have no idea how much skill he has? He studied Aikido since he was seven and is the first Foreigner to ever open a Dojo in Japan, taking his Father In Law’s name as his own…
2. Anyone who says a front kick isn’t complicated, doesn’t know much about the mechanics and physics of combative arts.
So we have the ridiculously manly guy on the left, and the slightly less manly guy on the right. And Steven in the background. All for fairly obvious reasons.
Any openly gay men in the UFC? I’m asking because if such a guy had a winning streak it would be pretty awesome, and certainly he’d get the wrestling/hugging advantage.
MMA tends to have a sort of “locker room” mentality, so for now there aren’t going to be a lot of openly gay people in it.
This is actually one of the things about MMA I don’t like. But this is common in all sports, not just MMA.
My cousin is gay, and does jiu-jitsu competitions and is about to have his first amateur MMA match in a few months. The sad thing is 90% of his training partners don’t know he’s gay, including the guys who are going to be in his corner when he fights.
“Makes you wonder if MMA was around when martial arts actors like Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Van Damme and Seagal were in their prime how well they would have done.”
Of this list only Chuck Norris has an actual fight record, and therefore any quantifiable skill.
STEVEN SEAGAL DOESN’T LEAVE OPPONENTS IN THE RING.
HE LEAVES CORPSES.
Has he even entered a ring?
A doughnut is kind of a ring.
Wouldn’t Bruce Lee have been something like 60 years old by the time Segal/Van Damme/Norris were in their prime?
have you never seen a martial arts movie? Old men are basically gods.
I bet they can’t actually fight for shit, lol
Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris were both in their prime at the same time. they actually fought each other in the Bruce Lee film…RETURN OF THE DRAGON.
EPIC FIGHT ! ! ! !
Patented front kick? Bullshit. That is the most basic kick there is. Steven Seagal is such a tool.
I was going to say, I bet I could randomly stumble upon this patented kick, without any knowledge of what it is or how it’s done.
WELL WHERE’S YOUR PATENTED KICK, PUU
WHY DON’T YOU HAVE A PATENTED KICK
I have a patent on your remakes good sir.
:O
Not my remakes!
What are my remakes now?

UFC is full of douches.
Bujinkan is full of douches.
Douchebags EVERYWHERE.

Sambo78 needs to come in here and go completely sickhouse.
You rang?
Ahem, where to start.

There are a lot of paper tigers in martial arts with outstanding credentials.
And just as many badasses that live to train in martial arts. Not seeking glory, celebrity and/or rank.
Holy Crap! He’s Tall!
So we have the ridiculously manly guy on the left, and the slightly less manly guy on the right. And Steven in the background. All for fairly obvious reasons.
But who is grey tshirt man? Why is he there?
Dana White, president of the UFC.
FYI, the less-manly looking guy won.
Any openly gay men in the UFC? I’m asking because if such a guy had a winning streak it would be pretty awesome, and certainly he’d get the wrestling/hugging advantage.
Nick Ring is openly gay.
I didn’t know he’s openly gay. That’s cool.

Make what you want out of that.
Hulk Hogan would tear them all apart!
By Hulk Hogan, you mean Randy Savage.
When I looked at this picture all I saw was Arianny Celeste!
Her last name rhymes with molest.
Just sayin’.
