LT, lighten up. Your attitude is in line with that of RIAA and the major recording labels: sampling is only allowed if it profits us/suits our taste/etc. Remember Weird Al’s “Amish Paradise?” Coolio didn’t consider it “good enough.”

Vanilla Ice made bad music, however, the last time I turned on the radio I was aurally raped by many equally bad artists. Soulja Boy… Vanilla Ice… sounds like names from the same “retard name generator” to me. Vanilla Ice was definitely not alone in making bad music.
One thing to note is this – he did get rich and fuck a lot of hot women by making his bad music. I would do much worse than making bad music to get the same pay and chicks. Cut the man some slack.
Ripping off Queen / Bowie… its rap music. There is not a thimble full of musical creativity in rap music. Sampling is simply expected.
I cannot think of a single rapper that writes good music. The lyrics and rap, sure (it’s debatable, but I will give due credit, it is original and can be good). But the backing music? It will never stand on it’s own; it’s too simple or is a sample-loop. The backing music is just not a priority in Rap.
I consider this sad, but still a welcome blessing. Thanks to Rap music not being able to stand without the vocals, I will never be tortured by this crap Rap music in elevators and waiting rooms.

My favorite Vanilla Ice story is Suge Knight hanging him off a balcony until he signed away whatever rights he had.
I like that song he did with The Bloodhound Gang.

Ice’s claim was that he didn’t steal the baseline, because the original goes:
“bah-bah bum bah-bah banum”
And his goes:
“bah-bah bum bah-bah banum tsss”
With the little drum snare at the end, making it different, so he piggybacked the idea without full on stealing it.

He lives in my area of south Florida, and the local radio station hosts their annual Christmas party at his house, well, mansion, I guess. He performs, some local bands perform, many drunken shenanigans ensue.
I have to admit, I think it’s pretty damn cool of anybody to open their house up to a few hundred strangers, but for a quasi-celebrity to do it, well, I do give him the tiniest bit of respect.

Listen to almost anything produced by Dan Nakamura (Automator). There are dozens, maybe hundreds of other examples.
Now, most rap is crap, I’ll agree. But using samples in music doesn’t make it any less creative or musical. There’s plenty of music ‘made from scratch’ that is crap, too.
‘Mixed media’ art is a good analogue. Even if you’re just cutting and gluing, it can be done creatively, or it can suck.
and ‘Cool as Ice’ is one of the best movies ever made. Yep yep!

Say what you will Tiki, but you’re wrong about it. Ice ripped the bassline straight from Queen/Bowie’s “Under Pressure”, added one A note in every other pause, and made millions. He also stole the idea for the main focus of the song from a national black fraternity without permission or credit to either Queen/Bowie or Alpha Pi Alpha.
True, he is a terrible musician as well; this doesn’t merit mentioning, as just about every hip-hop artist to follow him were and are terrible musicians as well. What is worth mentioning is that the “Iceman” is a biter and a fraud. As an actual musician I’m offended that any part of this poser’s music lives on to this day.
I don’t care about his Queen music fiasco, i just want to know why he hasn’t been shot yet?

There are a gazillion musicians from every genre, who have rehashed, remixed, remade or otherwise butchered older songs. It’s called art. Sometimes it sucks, sometimes it’s great. I don’t understand why people are so quick to denigrate musicians to try to recycle old ideas in new ways. It happens all the time, and in more ways, and by more musicians than a lot of people seem to realize…
It’s called making things better. or what not.
You can’t put something out there and expect nobody to use that or edit it in some way.

Excellent lyrics, and some of their tracks are remixed as instrumentals. Most of the Clan has serious talent. Even if you don’t like some of them, there’s so many different styles being represented that you’re bound to enjoy some of it. I think you suffer from being exposed to too much pop music, and not enough urban poetry.
There’s only a few Wu-Tang hits I’ve liked, but damn do they have a good taste in movies: 36th Chamber and 8 Diagram Pole Fighter have got to be the two best action movies ever made.
