Hey guys, I have a desperate cry for help for you:
I need to purchase a GPS that will let me load in about 400 custom addresses. Do any of your space apes know of such a device? I’ve run into a few that will permit me to load “points of interest” but I’m not sure how useful that’s going to be.
I have zero experience with these things, any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Edit: all those responses and not a single person here uses a stand alone GPS? wtf guys.
most ive ever heard of is eight… best bet would probably one that has some kind of removable storage, then just get a massive card or whatever.
from a very quick googlin:
reviews.cnet.com/gps/garmin-gpsmap-76cx-gps/4505-3490_7-31734370.html
this is why I’m confused, because from my own quick googling, it looked like practically all of the ones on the market right now permit for importing of addresses:
www.google.com/search?q=gps+import+addresses
notably is this forum thread from a couple years ago in regards to a garmin GPS:
www.laptopgpsworld.com/1184-how-can-i-import-100-addresses-garmin-mobile-pc
in which you manage all the addresses on your computer and then just push them over to the unit.
I might be completely misreading that though, I was really hoping someone on MCS had a GPS that they used themselves this way.
Anything that can run google maps should be able to meet your needs. I believe you can make custom points of interest on your google account, and be able to login to google maps on a phone with a google account, and it’ll load up your custom maps. If not for then just having a text document and copy / pasting in addresses as needed.
Seriously. epic 4g phone for the win.
looking for a stand alone GPS unit though, you know of any that will load up google maps?
Why sell yourself short? Modern technology / pricing gives you more bang for your buck. than just a stand alone gps. You’re shooting yourself in the foot by trying to price it out that way.
Get an android tablet pc with gps for the same cost, and just mount it to the dash.

Cause I’ve been asked to buy a stand alone GPS, not question orders.
people get shot for doing that you know!
Cell phone GPS sucks. It’s not true GPS, it’s just signal triangulation, which means its useless outside of cell range.
Cell phones with GPS use the GPS built into the phone, not a triangulation of the cell phone towers.
You have 2 technologies mixed up.
He’s talking about aGPS (assisted GPS) which well and truly blows. My Droid2 can do aGPS, but also does pure GPS, and does it pretty damned good even out in the mountains.
Do some reading guys
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
aGPS only assists the startup of a GPS signal or assists in poor signal condition.
Again, these are 2 technologies – GPS and cell phone towers.
If your device is incapable of only using the GPS, then your deice is shit.
That, or you need a better program for the phone.
Normally I wouldn’t bother replying to you because you’re a piece of shit that I’d be glad to see die in the woods. But since someone else might be misinformed by your idiocy….
From your own link:
“Some aGPS devices do not have the option of falling back to standalone or autonomous GPS.”
So, as a rule, you can’t count on cell phone GPS being reliable without cell signal. YMMV, depending on model. Additionally, if you’re using an app like Google maps, you’ll need an internet connection just to get the maps, otherwise the GPS is kind of useless.
“Some aGPS devices do not have the option of falling back to standalone or autonomous GPS.” Exactly. Moto Tundra and Nokia Mural now sit in a drawer because of this. I tried loading 3rd party apps to use the GPS, but without that “feature” enabled by AT&T, shit wouldn’t work. No f-n way was I paying $10/month for aGPS on their network (dropped calls, no signal, etc) where I live. I don’t love Verizon, but it does work for me, and Google maps on the Droid is free. BTW, I love the satellite imagery in lieu of the vector gfx.
Also spot on regarding the maps via internet. However, if Tiki is loading a ton of addresses, wouldn’t that kind of imply that he’d probably be in an area with cell/data coverage? Just sayin, though might have missed something.
Not on ATT. If the GPS “feature” isn’t enabled (as in you paying for said “feature”) then the GPS does not work at all, no matter what software you load on it. Might be different with the Droid phones they have now, but they’re standalone GPS and not aGPS anyway.
As a side note, the aGPS and the maps that were on my Tundra were both accurate and fairly detailed. But it was $10/month that I didn’t want to spend.
Other than that, buy used?

You can’t return used to the store or get a warranty on it.

I figure, since you can open Office documents, you could just have all the addresses in a Word file and plug them in as you need them.
Also why are you buying it? Is it for work?
What do you work as?
Yes for work, but not for me, for a sales guy taht’s going to be going to a ton of locations around the state
My tn-20 has an SD card slot. Not sure if you can use it for more addresses.
I have about 20 in it so far. I only got it recently and started adding all the jobs I went to. But then I moved.
You’re best bet would be to just buy one in the store or demo it first.
Yeah, actually, try adding the same number of addresses in the store because I’m pretty sure there is a re-stocking fee for taking GPS back.
And I’m also pretty sure the salesmen are going to have no clue on how many you can add, and are on commission and just there to sell.
400 addresses? Wow. I have a nice TomTom that works really well for me, but I have no idea how many addys it can hold.
You can donwload the maps to the phone so it doesn’t need a constant internet connection. A Lot of phones here in the U.K. have proper GPS.
yeah, but how do you talk on the phone and use the GPS at the same time?
You shouldn’t be talking while driving
Here’s a fucking idea. Drive around and learn how to get to places.

I work for an ambulance company in phoenix and my EMT has a garmin nuvi255w. we use it all the time to get to locations and it hasnt failed us yet. the one in the link says it has 1000 “favorites” you can add. it also has the lifetime maps and traffic. hope it helps
I went for the garmin nuvi 1450t, I’m hoping it’ll have the same POI or ‘favorites’ system on it
waypoints are the key word (waypoints = saved addresses)
Two things…
1 – What do you need a GPS for? to find Emma Watson?
2 – Im start thinking that Tiki and Casemod are the same person.
I’ve already posted MY GPS…
Exercising my google-fu….

doesn’t look like a driving GPS however… I tried my best, now stop this emma madness. Don’t get me wrong, I like her, but I like variety more.
Dude, Garmin NUVI. I programmed about 200 custom addresses into it.
Dont know if itll take 400. Where the fuck are you going?
Safe travels, unless you’re from New Jersey, in which case, disregard everything I said and go fuck yourself.

it says it has 1000 (Waypoints are how many you can program)
I looked through more of them and most of the Garmin ones say 1000, but the TomToms have around 50
“Waypoints are how many you can program”
Very nice, even I didn’t know that.
Tiki,
I work as an on-site SMB consultant, driving an average of 60K miles a year. I have a Garmin Nuvi 1300 I use for exactly your stated purpose. I have over 300 addresses programmed into it as searchable, sortable favorites; the unit is supposed to be able to handle over 1,000 of them. My favorites track Clients, Suppliers, and favorite places for lunch for me in three different states.
If you get the Nuvi 1300LMT (going for around $250 these days) it includes lifetime map updates and lifetime real-time traffic updates. Traffic updates work great for me along the I-25 and I-70 corridors in CO, WY, and UT; no guarantee it’ll work as well wherever your sales guy is gonna be using it.
Listen to this guy tiki, not the guys telling you to get a phone with gps…
Seriously, kids. wtf? Don’t recommend a guy a car with a cd player when he just wants a cd player. Pretty idiotic..
WWEWD?
What Would Emma Watson Do?
Do that.
Ok so ignoring all the suggestions about getting a phone with GPS (why anyone would do that is a mystery to me)
Just get a GPS
It’s made for GPS only.
There is no fiddling with any settings just to get it to work properly or the possibility of cell phone towers giving you a non-accurate reading.
I paid $40 for my GPS and it hasn’t failed me once, even though it’s got bad reviews.
I suppose people expect it to be perfect and don’t realize that it’s mostly user error.
If you want help tiki I will be on steam. Don’t listen to these idiot.
I drove a 20ft penske flatbed, overloaded (illegal) and unloaded thousands of miles with my GPS and it was great.
you are dumb, you are really soo dumb
Typical response from someone who is wrong: doesn’t provide reason to their opinion.
This should be all the proof you really need tiki 😉
Listen to me.
“Edit: all those responses and not a single person here uses a stand alone GPS? wtf guys.”
I guess kings don’t really count as the general population? 😉
also tiki, consider battery life
If its only going to be used in the car, don’t worry about it.
My GPS has about a 3 hour battery life, and has a pedestrian feature…
Just something to think about
sorry, you’re just the egotistical side of me, so I don’t need your opinions, I already have them 😉
