” José de Sousa Saramago (November 16, 1922 – June 18, 2010) was a Nobel-laureate Portuguese novelist, playwright and journalist. His works, some of which can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the human factor. Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998. He founded the National Front for the Defense of Culture (Lisbon, 1992) with Freitas-Magalhães and others. In the last years of his life, he lived in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain.”

haah nobody cares.
i’m portuguese and I couldn’t care less. the man turned into an arrogant snob in his later years. And turned his back on the communist party. couldn’t stand him.
All our country has now is Jose Mourinho :'(
suck to be you 🙂
I fail to see the problem with the fact that he “turned his back on the communist party”. The less of those guys the better. Bunch of guys that say and promise exactly what the poorest of people need but when they rule countries it’s the poorest that suffer the most.
The Portuguese communist party was the main underground opposition against the ultra-fascists Hitler inspired (Literally, they had their own version of Hitler youth and everything) dictatorship.
They never held power but what they did to help overthrow the fascists not only helped Portugal (which barely had paved roads or plumbing when the fascists were around), but also stopped the outright slaughter of non-white colonists, and brought an eventual end to colonialism in Asia and Africa.
Anyway, he was a pretty clever writer. I always liked his books, even his later ones.
AND NOTHING OF VALUE WAS LOST
Best writer ever. RIP.
