If I recall my Big Bang theory correctly, it wasn’t that there was nothing, it was that all matter and energy was tightly packed into a dense ‘ball,’ which later exploded. Proponents will point to the fact that galaxies and other objects are moving away from each other in a predictable manner, and can even roughly approximate where it all started.
Creationists, on the other hand, can point to the Bible and say “First there was nothing, then God spake and everything sprang into existence. And the Earth is only 6000 years old. And, uh, other stuff that makes no sense must be true since it’s in a book.”

According to my Chemistry teacher at school, all the matter was squashed to about the size of a golf ball.
Two motherfuckers from like Denver brought a molecule to a temperature of absolute zero in 2001 (I think) and got a Nobel Prize for realizing the elusive fourth form of matter.
Absolute zero hasn’t existing since the big bang populated the big empty with heat and even in space there is residual heat.
The cause of the big bang and what created the initial ball is what I want to know.

The Big Bang Theory doesn’t say anything about what the universe was like before it exploded. There was no “before” the Big Bang, because there was no time before that. Like Stephen Hawking has said, talking about something before the big bang is like saying something is north of the north pole.

Cool thing to think about: Big Bang Theory tells exactly where the explosion happened, right here. Its not that there is a 3D sphere that is expanding and everything is moving from the center. It more like a 4D sphere and all of space and matter is on the surface. So every single point is equally valid as the the center of the universe. Isn’t that cool?

Everywhere would be the center only if the universe carried on forever, as there would be infinite stars in every direction from every point, so every point would be the center. However, since we know the universe doesn’t go on forever, there must be one point somewhere which is the center.
Um, Ben1605 – what are you suggesting is “outside” of the universe? I take it your view is that the universe is like a balloon being inflated inside a room – with “outside” being the rest of the room?
I prefer reboot’s statement, where the universe is self-contained in a 4D space. There *is* no “outside” into which the universe is expanding, rather, the universe creates its own space as it expands. (Sorry – it’s hard to discuss this in English – the language contains far too many assumptions to be precise.)
The universe does go on forever, as there isn’t anything outside the universe. If the universe was the size of a glof ball, then it would still go on forever, since the only viewpoint possible would be for someone inside the ball.

I’ve heard the expanding universe explained like this: the universe is like the surface of a giant balloon. The universe expands like a balloon. It’s just hard to imagine because, unlike a balloon, there is no space inside the sphere of the universe; that’s why you just have to imagine the surface but not the “inside” since, with the universe, there is no inside.

Well, the big bang would have come from a singularity. Time, distance, size and such are all relative, right? How we experience time depends on things such as gravity and so on. Well, this singularity would have been so compact that time and space simply wouldn’t have existed in any real way that would be meaningful.
Still doesn’t say what *caused* the singularity, I know, but I doubt *true* science will ever have an explanation for that. Not sure why science-is-everything types fight with religion types about it. I would have assumed that the science types would just say ‘it doesn’t matter’ and the religious types would say ‘well, there’s a perfect gap to fit god into. But fuck knows people will find any reason to fight.

Well, I think the idea behind the 4-dimensional balloon thing is that it’s trying to explain that the universe is infinitely bended upon itself. If you were to go it one direction at an impossibly fast speed, you’d end up where you started, which it our view is more like travelling across a surface than a void. Like, you know, one of them metaphor dealies.
But, yeah, infinitely bended upon itself.
I dunno about the big bang (other than it’s gnab gib spelled backwards), but in response to mAgnUS BUTTfoorson I have to say that Absolute Zero has never been achieved in a lab. Oh they’ve gotten awfully damned close. (4.5×10-^10 K) was by MIT in 2003. That’s so close, the mind boggles. But not QUITE there yet. All that energy, just to keep energy away from something. Wow.

sansbutt, actually no big bang theorists believes that it all started off as a single atoms. Atoms didn’t even begin to form until 300,000 years after the big bang.
OK, let’s say, empty space is created by the singularity as part of the dimensions that were contained in it in the beginning or those dimensions existed previously and matter was just concentrated in the singularity? In the first case, we can’t know what was/is outside the singularity, as the dimensions we can operate in (and understand) are limited to our universe and our own existence is linked to it. In the second case, it can be infered that the matter was there before the singularity exploded, in some other state and the problem of how the universe came into existence comes up again and it’s probable that we can’t know how it came to be either.
Conclusion: it doesn’t matter.

Conversations like this are the reason that the vast majority of the world is fundamentally religious.

iddqd, Foinlavin, I don’t know what you guys are talking about. This is one of the better discussion threads I’ve seen on MCS in a while. Everyone seems to have some grasp of science involved and there is just discussion on some of the details. No one has brought up any insults or conspiracy theories. The only improvement could be if we had been better about cited sources. I wish there were more discussions on the interent like this one.
I believe there is never and will never be definite was of knowing. Thus, we should just drop it and enjoy our lives while we’re still around.
