I’ve got an IR pass filter on my camcorder. It’s one of the old Sony Handicams with the night-shot option. Daytime videos end up with an interesting feel to them. As seen in Error401’s shot above, a clear sky will appear dark, and everything gets this ghostly, kinda freaky appearance. Oh, and it can see through thin clothing.
I shot this with an Olympus C-4040 (4MP) with I think an 820nm filter, and about a 3 second exposure. It was about 6pm with the sun setting behind the camera. Most modern cams have a strong IR cut filter built into the cam, but the C-4040 and C-2020’s had weak cut filters and you could take IR, but not off hand. You can get cams modified so they will take IR at “normal” speeds, but it’s a tad expensive. I’m saving up to get my D3000 modified, but it’s gonna run about $400 just for the mod. The other thing about IR is it takes a bunch of post processing (mostly channel swaps and other color tweaks). Here’s another one of mine that’s more of a deep red IR: 401recon.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=89&pos=2 Also, there are “ready to go” cams on ebay that are pretty afordable if you’re interested.
How do you go about doing this?

Hmm, I have an old Sony Handicam too. What IR pass filter do you use?
The Handicam is a model TRV65. The filter is a 37mm 1000nm IR pass filter. Cheap and easy to get from ebay.
Well…that as some possibilities.

Needs more Tyranosaurus.
That looks pretty neato… 😀
