That question was posed before reading about how he’s a “rabid Fascist” and that he finds it his duty to overthrow an American government that supports gay marriage…
…and apparently there’s been a theory (pretty much since the book was published) that Ender’s Game was an apologia for Hitler, about how sometimes a gifted leader has to do horrible things, unknowingly, to save his people.
I never did get around to reading Card, but a lot of Space Operas have Fascist undertones. This proclivity was sent up famously in Spinrad’s The Iron Dream.
Hadn’t heard the OSC = crazy part. Is he hard-core Mormon or is there more to it?
Liked the book, a lot, except for the whole sub-plot with Ender’s two siblings. I probably would have thought it cool had I been a lot younger and/or hadn’t already experienced quite a bit of “internet debate”, but the idea of two young kids –no matter how mentally gifted– changing the world by arguing political philosophy on the web was beyond ridiculous.
The whole “child super-genius” concept is ridiculous. I liked the book when I was about the same age as characters, but when I read it as an adult its pretty obviously pandering to the target audience.
I have a signed copy, in which OSC wrote, “To Neil: A child rearing guide.” When I started laughing at his comment he looked at me witha crazy look like I was defiling his life’s work. Also heavy stuff.
I always thought Speaker for the Dead was better than Ender’s Game. Way more interesting because it deal’s with Ender’s psychology after realizing that he’s committed genocide. I thought Xenocide was just as good, but then Children of the Mind just went friggin’ bonkers and basically had a whole new cast of characters out of nowhere. I read the first Bean parallel novel, but then I grew up and realized how batshit insane OSC is and just couldn’t bring myself to read any more of his work.
Love this book as well. I tried to finish reading the series, but got stuck halfway through Shadow of the Hegemon.
Anyway, why is it at all a bad thing that Card’s crazy? Aren’t all the best artists?

Orson Scott Card is like L Ron but not dead.
I thought this was a great book, couldn’t get into Ender’s Shadow though.

The “child super-genius” is pulled from the Mormon mythology. He claims it isn’t so, but I certainly have my doubts.
