I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
I did swear and affirm to that oath and did such “step up to the plate”. Then September 11 did occur (while my command was is in drydock), and then we invaded the WRONG FSCKING COUNTRY for BLATANTLY LIED TO REASONS! And then I had less and less desire to re-up.
Now I take the opportunity to vote against anyone who has been a politician for more than a decade. Vote the fscking incumbent out!
Robert Heinlein had it right with his novel “Starship Troopers”
Your right, in “Starship Troopers” only those that has faced death in the service of their country should have the right to vote or hold office, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea.
Who do they fight for? The profits of the military-industrial complex? Serious question, because they’re certainly not fighting to keep you safe from WMDs or any of the rest of the lies they were told.
I think they’re aware of who funds them, and who they serve voluntarily. The problem is that the people they chose to serve (ie. the people of the USA) care nothing for them beyond saluting and downing a beer when they’re reminded that a soldier they won’t rememeber the name of in 15 seconds has died in somewhere they couldn’t locate on a map. Most don’t even know what our soldiers are doing in many cases (really, look up some surveys, there is are some scary ideas as to why we’re at war).
This is compounded by the people that fund them thinking that they have bought something which was for sale, that can be returned to the seller to be forgotten about if it gets broken and a replacement bought.
Put flags on your car.
Loudly claim support for your troops at every political rally.
Use them as a symbol of *your* righteousness.
Then remove veteran’s benefits more each year.
Under equip them by more than 40%.
Throw out their only translators because they’re gay.
Claim all that complain are not *real* soldiers.
Censor their sacrifices and their tribulations as it makes for bad news.
You’re the *real* American.
Drinking your beer.
Watching American Idol.
Claiming to love your god while you cheat on your wife.
Having never been outside America to know what actually makes you an American compared to the rest of the world.
How dare they question you?
You have a bumper sticker on your car that says “Support our Troops.”

Stop this worshipping of soldiers. They get drafted and sent out to do bullshit – more like temporary slaves than heroes. Pity them instead.
Unless they go voluntarily, in which case they’re either very daring or rather stupid.
I don’t think the Draft has been used since Vietnam. Personally, I think the current war is a bunch of BS and is accomplishing nothing. I think the leadership should have pulled them back years ago. However, that doesn’t stop me from being thankful that there are people willing to put their lives on the line for the freedoms we enjoy.
Are we discounting the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II? Because if yes, then you’re doing a bang-up job on your military history. Otherwise, you sound like an ass.
Revolutionary war is ancient history. Would I have to condemn american military forces for defending a slave-keeping nation in between the revolutionary and the civil war? The civil war, anyways, wasn’t exactly to defend freedoms as much as to maintain territorial integrity, no?
(War of 1812? What was that?)
WWI: Just a war. Nobody was protecting freedoms there, as far as I can see. Nationalist militarism left and right, sure, but no freedom-hating oppression.
WWII: Ignoring the needle prick that was pearl harbour, no americans were harmed in the making of this war. You could make the argument that foreign freedoms were defended, of course, but that balances out neatly with the establishment of american hegemony throughout europe and japan, I think. More of a punitive war than a defensive one, as I see it.
Of course, keeping in mind the bang-up job that an unnamed country has done on the glorification of its (military) history, I guess to that country’s citizens I’d sound like an ass no matter how thoroughly I’d work on putting that topic into perspective.
Holy crap Gily. I hope to god you’re not actually an American. If you’re an indicator of the general populace, then the job I and a shit ton of others do every day to protect you is a complete waste. *Cue Picard face palm*
This picture was taken on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC. I know this because I’ve been in that building and spoke with the guy who wrote it on the board. Whereabouts did you aquire this photo tiki?
You know this seemed a lot more interesting when I thought it was written in the hot desert sands, waiting day after boring day, long stretches of nothingness punctured by abrupt violence and carnage, where the writer didn’t speak the language but know terrorist psychos were just waiting to kill him.
But actually it was some dude on some base stateside? Oh fuck him he doesn’t have to go to the mall because they have those cheap stores on base.
Well i am glad to see you people are actually doing something about the situation instead of just soap boxing on the internet like some jackass with a “redefeat bush” bumper sticker.
America is at war.
The Marine Corps is at war.
??????
Profit
This is so sad.
someone needs to remember who they fight for, and who funds them, and who they serve
7 years now since I said those words for the first time. They never cease to move me.

Awesome it dropped my properly parsed rant /rant tags…

Those toys you get to play with don’t come free, boy. And don’t forget about the Air Force, Army, UN, other coalition forces…

When was the last time they did that?
(Correct answer: Never. So far all they ever defended was economic and political interests)
Are we discounting the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II? Because if yes, then you’re doing a bang-up job on your military history. Otherwise, you sound like an ass.
Wait… the war of 1812?
Revolutionary war is ancient history. Would I have to condemn american military forces for defending a slave-keeping nation in between the revolutionary and the civil war? The civil war, anyways, wasn’t exactly to defend freedoms as much as to maintain territorial integrity, no?

I can’t tell what he’s even talking about. I understood the words, but the sentences made no sense.
I disagree. It’s never a waste to defend freedoms. I would say that the education system as a whole has failed, but not us.

“so help me flying spaghetti monster”
would that work?
otherwise it’s a fairy frightening oath for someone with guns to take
You can insert the word “affirm” instead of “swear” and leave off “So help me God” altogether.
@Paul is Drunk. You forgot,”and let the male member get away with raping the female members of our military without facing justice.”
America is not at war.
America is making a nuisance of itself.
Again.
brb, going to the mall
This reminded me that I need to go to Radio Shack and Lids… Thank you for fighting for my freedom to buy micro-helicopters and Kangol hats!
So the Marines make up the whole army? Cool story bro.
@Paul and James Tusk
