So the enterprise B was an excelsior class ship? Good to know. I don’t think we ever saw it with 24 shuttlecraft.
And why does a universe where large ships are lumbering things that take large arcs to turn around have almost exclusively forward facing weapons? It makes sense with fighter craft like ships like in Star Wars, but with these, it’d be like “oh no! the enemy is behind us! Okay, take a long, graceful turn until they’re in front of us, and oh whoops! too late, we’re dead.”
Some of the warships had multiple weapons both fore and aft. Like someone said below they are more explorers than anything. Its likely that they only expect to encounter minor enemies such as pirates who can’t compete with their superior technologies.
So why does Star Trek not have any small form fighter craft? A 24 piece squadron should be pretty steady if it was loaded with weapons instead of scanners. Oh wait they did for the Dominion War, but they were just used to distract the Cardassians.
Apparently the Maquis also had fighters, but not the kind I was expecting. I was expecting the hybrid carrier/battleship style we see in Star Wars (because to me this makes the most sense).
Anyway, it certainly ins’t accurate depiction of plausible technology. In truth space wars will likely be waged over much larger distances than what we see in films and TV, with ships not even getting close enough to see each other without instruments. Also, we’ll never get to space because of the firmament. Its in the way.
For a series that just hand-waves the technology in favor of the social commentary, they sure have a lot of technical specs like this one floating around within their pop culture gravitation well.
Could not have made the specs harder to read.

They have phasers that go in all directions.
According to my foray into Star Trek: Online, the phasers with a 360 degree arc aren’t as strong as those with a 180 degree arc.
I agree with this. i have some 360 cannons that do like 100 damage compared to the 220 phasers that do 130 damage.
Well runabout would be about the right size for fighter craft, wouldn’t it?

Because Star Trek is framing device for morality plays, not an accurate depiction of plausible technology.
Shut up with your logic.

fighters are worthless when you have computer targeting with a weapons system that can vaporize anything smaller than a runabout
because the Federation were meant to be pacifists. I think.
They are explorers. Explorers need weapons too.
They sure do have a lot of weapons for pacifists.
Peace through superior firepower!
My wife woke me up the other night at 12am and told me to giver one in the ass…..Yes i am a trekkie who gets to do cool shit
