although I wouldnt quite call him a victim, this is one of the most memorable images of Vietnam. He and many other Buddhist Monks would walk into a crowded area, pour gasoline over themselves, and hold perfectly still as they burned. calling them “hippies” and for the most part saying “good riddance” illustrates you have no idea what your talking about, seeing as the term “hippie” mostly refers to an American, and they did this as an act of total devotion to their cause, in hope to have a war NOT start.
A similar immolation happened one week ago (August 12, 2007) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, outside a naval shipyard.
“It wasn’t until we were directly in front of the roaring blaze that we noticed him, sitting like a buddha. Only his face and chest were visible. He was statue-like, serene, showing no signs of discomfort as the fire was consuming his body.”
Wow, if some of you guys don’t have a sense of humour, what the heck are you doing here? Of course I know the story behind the picture. Even if I didn’t I’d have gleaned it from the first post.
And JoeCrow, you’re so thick, you must think “The Amazing Race” is a documentry about white people.
This doesn’t really have much to do with the guy’s religion, other than the fact that it considers this kind of thing acceptable.
This guy (Thich Quang Duc) burned himself alive in protest of South Vietnam’s president being an ass.
Good, one less hippie to worry about.

These are words from someone who has absolutely no clue what oppression really means.

I hope someone had marshmallows.
Ultimate test of MCS. Could we make fun of a man who burned himself alive against supression?
Then I passed. Others failed. The failed can log off teh internets now.
I will set myself on fire to cleanse the shame. 🙁

The car in the photo is intact and currently on display in The Citadel, Hue, Vietnam.
