My Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E”, Good Conduct, and my National Defense Service ribbon kinda sorta support this theory. (Only 5 ribbons over six years). My SSBN Deterrent Patrol was for mostly showing up (you know being trapped in the bowels of a metal tube).
However, my Dolphins, I feel like I earned that; Enough that I volunteered to take care of DC gear (to the point that I got injured taking care of said gear, but that’s a story for another day).
I remember the days when you had to actually do something to receive a medal, as compared to today, when they give awards for just doing your job.
