Released over 7 years ago, I’m just now getting around to watching this re-enactment of a pretty terrible situation, which was only six years prior to the movie coming out. It was long enough that most of the legal shenanigans have shaken out and to nearly no one’s surprise, no one was help liable for the event and no one served prison time.
The film was much less of a jingoistic, flag waving affair than I was assuming, but instead of extreme patriotism they went with extreme class warfare with two blue color workers (Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell) pushing back against the company man (John Malkovich) that wants to skip testing so they can save some money. The blue collar vs white collar situation is all a setup for the second half of the movie which quickly transitions into a typical disaster film with some pretty ok visuals and special effects and plenty of high drama. It’s an effective telling of the story and I have very little to complain about, other than the film being exactly what I thought it was going to be, but how is that any slight against the film itself?
