The movie opens with a couple going out to a cemetery 200 miles away from home to put a wreath on a grave. Maybe it’s a brother and sister? Maybe! But my main focus is that this is a surprisingly fantastic transfer, I had heard the copyright on the film had expired, but this is fantastic on Kanopy, so I can only imagine that this is an official hd transfer from the original film, and boy howdy am I here for it. The story and action are all prime ’60’s shlock, but it works for what it is, and I’m impressed at how well it works. I’m pretty shocked that Romero went hard on the “alien radiation” origin of the zombie virus, because to my knowledge this isn’t mentioned again in the subsequent films.
“They’re coming to get you Barbra.”
I didn’t know this was from this movie, happy to find out it’s origin.
It isn’t that the copyright expired. It never had one. Romero forgot to put the copyright notice explicitly in the film (This was when that was required to assert copyright).
I just found out there’s going to be a boutique release this year, I bed this is that transfer, just up on streaming
Just get the Criterion version. It is gorgeous.

I have no need to own this one, I’m not a big enough fan to want it on my wall.
Ah. Big fan myself. I’ve had multiple copies over the years. Have a poster up. It gets quoted in the household often. It’s weirdly like a comfort movie for me at this point.
