I had no idea this was going on. Sometimes you Americans seem to go out of your way to ring the last ounce of nastiness out of a situation. I can’t think of any other liberal western democracy where inmates are charged for these costs. Loading up debt on people who are unlikely every to be able to pay? It’s akin to the debtors’ prisons satirised by Dickens and abolished in Victoria’s reign.
We still have it written into our constitution that slavery is illegal with the exception of the incarcerated, who are explicitly expected to be slave workers for the state, or in their proxy, the private prison industry.

This is what happens when you privatize prisons.
Private prisons should not be legal in any capacity. It’s god damn absurd.
