For nearly the entire movie I was asking myself, is the studio shooting this show taking advantage of Klieg or is she taking advantage of them? There’s clear signs that both parties are getting something out of the arrangement but I can’t really say who’s more responsible for the bad behavior that ultimately ends up being broadcast on tv. The concept is pretty interesting, her show ends up being just a biographical statement of how messed up the world is, and honestly I think I’ve seen a few shows like the one that she makes, from either Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie or the “Too Many Cooks” short from Adult Swim. The entire thing feels surreal, even when they’re not filming the surreal show.
Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack play two exceptionally important characters to Klieg’s life, but neither of them are given more screen time than their parts demand.
As an aside, I watched this on Kanopy, which is the “free with a library card” stream service that I finally got set up a few months ago. It’s been a rock solid app with some truly weird movies on it, and I’ve loved the experience thus far.
