You can see this thing poking into the skyline from anywhere in Chengde. You generally see it edge on, and it looks like a top heavy club standing on its handle. Most peculiar thing. Chengde is well worth a visit. Not for the smoky modern city you see here but for the Qing emperors’ summer palaces and huge park full of temples. And these days, via modern roads, it’s only 2 hours away from the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall, where you can walk along miles of the wall almost by yourself – not many people go there.
