I heard that Frank Grillow was going to be here and I do love me some Grillo action, but this is Frank Grillo like I’ve never seen him before with long hair, mustache, and a beard. It’s weird as hell, almost like an algamation of Mickie Rourke and John Depp, and ends up being weird as hell visually. It’s weird, but it works and helps me separate this role from his more super heroic stuff he’s done recently. He, along with Gerard Bulter, play a fantastic game of “talk the cop into doing something” from their prison cells, with the cop being played by Alexis Louder (Watchmen, Tomorrow War). She was already on my list of people that do good work, but this film definitely has me wanting more from her.
There’s a great use of multiple Chekhov’s guns in the first act, some of them being literally guns and others much less obvious at the time, but make for great “aha” moments when they pay off.
I greatly enjoyed it and had the same vibes as Assault on Precinct 13.
