Picking up immediately after 2018’s “Halloween”, we find Laurie Strode being transported from her death trap of a house to have emergency surgery for the stabbings she received during Michael’s assault on her fortress of death. Passing her on the way to her house? Fire trucks and first responders! The inevitable happens and there’s a ton of dead firefighters left behind as Michael is freed from his fire cage. From there it’s a paint by numbers horror story that never fails to show the absolute brutality of the violence that Michael is imparting on the town, all while being able to have some genuinely creepy and suspenseful moments that I enjoyed much more than the pure torture porn that modern horror has seemed to absolutely fallen in love with.
There’s a smearing of social commentary here as well, with some heavy handed mob justice standing in for online witch hunts and vigilantes. There’s mob justice vs innocent people, then there’s mob justice vs Michael, neither one of them end very well for one side or the other, but there’s something endearingly humorous about a mob that includes clowns and mimes chanting “evil dies tonight”.
“Now he’s turning us into monsters”
