If you’re a fan of Futurama, you might see some pretty fun parallels with The Stuff and Slurm, they’re close enough in concept that there has to be some sort of inspiration there, yeah? This is a great snapshot of 80’s America, with the hair cuts, fashion, political statements, television, it’s a perfect thing to point to when people ask what the 80s were like. Sure we didn’t have The Stuff, but that’s our own hidden shame, isn’t it?
The ADR is pretty rough in the first half of the film, something that I noticed got better as the film went on, and that’s literally my only complaint about how this particular Stuff was made. I do have some questions about why the kid so suspicious of The Stuff, after all, wouldn’t he want to eat some even after he saw it move? It’s The Stuff! Everyone’s talking about how tasty it is and how low in calories it is too, not to mention how cheap it is for something that’s so fullfilling!
To great lines from the film:
“No one’s as stupid as I look like I am”
and
“Are you eating it or is it eating you?”
Great shlocky movie. Some of the special effects are great, some others, not so much. The ones that are great though are really special. It’s a fun romp that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
I wonder what they made The Stuff out of that all the actors actually ate, I’ve heard that when you’re filming with food that because you have to take so many takes that you end up either spiting it all out into a bucket as you go, or you end up full as hell by the end of the day
It was different “stuff” depending on the shot. If you have Shudder watch the version of the movie from The Last Drive-In and Joe Bob talks about it. When an actor is eating it, it’s just marshmallow fluff if I remember right. But when they needed the “stuff” to do things it was other materials.
I don’t have shudder, it’s on tubi when I watched it: tubitv.com/movies/488465/the-stuff
