Johnny Carson once caused a toilet paper shortage by joking about a TP shortage to a populace who was already reeling from previous shortages. I mean, he wasn’t the SOLE cause but he was the tipping point because he got the message to the most people. So everyone panic bought TP (gee, that sounds familiar) and people could not be convinced that there wasn’t an actual shortage because they’d go into the stores and see empty TP shelves because selfish asshats would buy enough to last for the next six months.
