This is your party now. The GOP is facing a similar crisis of confidence the Catholics are – Catholics *should* be looking around at the people they associate themselves with and wondering if all the paedophiles and abusers were there all along, whether their club was set up to protect this behaviour in the first place and if they deserve all the support they’re given. Problem is, Catholics are failing at this on a grand scale from the bottom all the way to the tippy-top.
Your average GOP supporter should be doing the same now that it’s clear racism, demagoguery, conspiracy theories and borderline fascism have clearly been green-lit by their party.
You can’t have a rational conversation with someone that claims you are possessed by the devil. And unfortunately, those people vote. How do we even address a problem like this? Can someone unlearn that kind of crazy behavior or are they a lost cause? Would funding education help? I would hope so, but if we had an educated electorate a lot of these people would be unelectable. I think that should be the goal, but they’re not going to go peacefully. The elected wants to keep people stupid and the electorate has now taking pride in their stupidity.
You’ll never be able to rationalise someone out of a belief they have come to irrationally so education won’t help. Especially as, even if you had a critical thinking class or similar in school, you still couldn’t undo what they hear from the pulpit (and at home) every Sunday. You might catch a few.
But there’s also no incentive to do it. You can count on about 10-20% of the population being fucking crazy. It’s a big chunk of the population and if one ‘side’ harnesses most of that (and it does seem as if one has, I know the left has its crazies but *most* of the crazies voted Trump, let’s be honest) then their chances at election are significantly higher. And from the Left, those people are unreachable so they go after moderates.
You’ll never reach anyone who genuinely thinks you or your leaders rape children and eat their faces in front of them while they’re still alive. And this isn’t an exaggeration, support for their being a video of Hillary doing *this exact thing* is much higher amongst the crazies than you’d think.
I think we have to both in the US and here, in the UK – the alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.
Someone on a podcast Q&A I saw a couple nights ago asked “can US democracy survive the next Republican presidency?” – I think if the current Republican party is the party in question, the smart money’s on ‘no’.
And 40,000 votes is all that prevented a Trump re-election. That’s all.
I understand your talking about swing State margins, but are you sure that number’s correct? That sounds awfully low. Biden won PA alone by some 80,000 votes according to Wikipedia.

But I suspect they won’t, either.

I’m having a pessimistic day.

I know you’re right on a lot of this, but man it would be nice if we could reach these people.
