It took me a bit longer than normal to clear this game, I kept failing to remember that I was playing it and got completely sidetracked by a space dwarf mining game, but I eventually made it happen. The game is 15 years old at this point, from three console generations ago, but thanks to the backward compatibility system that xbox has, I was able to play it on my Project Scorpio xbox one x. There’s times that it shows it’s age, but those times thankfully don’t happen very often and with the console’s 4k uprezing system the game even looks pretty good, despite the age. I was particularly impressed with the squad mechanics, many games have tried this sort of thing, but only a few get it right, which I think Republic Commando definitely did.
The only major complaint I have about the game is that your commando squad is made of four clone troopers, the player is one and the other three have names, but they also have colors: red, yellow, green. I spent the entire game, right up to the final level, being concerned that two of my guys were injured in some way that I couldn’t figure out. It wasn’t until I was watching the extra videos that I found that contribution was suggested by Lucas himself.
It would be easy to look at gameplay and think this is just a reheated Doom clone and while you may be right in some minor ways, I’d say it does enough with the Star Wars lore to make it worthy of your time if you’re interested in the Droid Attack on the Wookies.
