The Walking Dead The Telltale Series – A New Frontier

Telltale’s award-winning and chart-dominating The Walking Dead series returns with its third season “A New Frontier”. Continuing the emotionally powerful story-telling seen in Seasons One and Two, we return to one of gaming’s most favoured characters – Clementine – a young girl who has grown up amid the horrors of the zombie apocalypse. We see her story through the eyes of Javier, a young man determined to find the family taken from him, and via playable flashbacks from Clem’s past telling the story of how she came to be on a quest for vengeance. In A New Frontier, players will discover what the world is like when civilisation begins to rebuild, and what sacrifices it will take to make society work again.

I put this off for a long while, only slightly getting interested after it was all done and released by another develper that wasn’t technically TellTale Games, who went bankrupt half way through the game and left unfinished. This is a shame, because this is the strongest of any of TWD games, and I’d honestly say it gives the TV series a run for it’s money in pure entertainment value. Clem is a fully fleshed out woman by this point and the new characters that she interacts with are both believable and understandable, even when they’re doing completely shitty things to each other. Unlike the first two seasons, I never once thought they were being dumb for stupidity’s sake.

The game engine was really showing it’s age though, with frame drops, audio issues, stuttering, long loading times, and border glitches. I’m not sure if the server connections were due to TellTale not being a functional company anymore, but in previous games you could compare your choices to what the rest of the players did, but that wasn’t an option this time through, just a message suggesting that if you were connected you’d see something like that at the end of the episodes.

I also suggest downloading all the episodes at once before you start any game play and do not pay attention to the backgrounds that x-box uses, spoilers lurk there and I saw them right before I started episode two, so for the entire next two episodes I was wondering when a certain character was going to die.
