Now ask: How do Indian citizens GET their voter IDS? The answer to THAT question, vs. how voter IDs are obtained in the U.S.is why voter ID laws in the US are for and about voter suppression.
Try not to use your ignorance as a weapon; it’s not really a good one.
Why is it that gun permits are acceptable Voter IDs in America but college IDs are not? Do people in India have to PAY for their IDs? Where do they go to get them? Are there long lines that would deter lower-income people who don’t have several hours to wait? Has a political party gone out of its way to shut down such locations in low-income neighborhoods, thus forcing people to drive for hours to get this ID (hours I may have previously mentioned that THEY DON’T HAVE TO SPARE)?
Because a License to Carry Firearms, CCP, CWP, or Gun Permit is a goverment issued ID card, college IDs are not.
Also, many college students are not residents, depending on how residenacy is defined in that state, and thus not eligible to vote, which does not even consider local elections.
For example, I attended college 7 counties away from my residence. My college ID looked less official then my high school one, maybe because in my Commonwealth, School Districts are government bodies.
But I agree with you that fees to be allowed to carry a gun are part of suppression, and that as gun permits are already established with a smooth issuing process, that we could easily make that the required ID to vote, and simply remove any lingering, unconstitutional problems with their issuing.
It was never intended to be used as a National ID outside of the Social Security Administration, (that horse left the barn long, long ago), so what about using the ubiquitous Social Security card for a Voter ID?
Our money-centric banking system already uses it… and since money seems to be our god; if it’s good enough for god….

This doesn’t even get into gerrymandering.
