I went back to watch this for two reasons:
1 – Just watched The Lion King (2019) the mostly pointless remake of a childhood classic. It did happen to feature Chiwetel Ejiofor as one of the voice over artists though, and I’m a fan of his work.
2 – I’m in the middle of reading Seveneves, a fantastic near future novel about the destruction of the Earth’s moon, which causes all sorts of terrible things to happen to the surface of the planet.
While looking up mr Ejiofor on imdb to figure out what else he had done, 2012 came up. I’ve seen it before, but due to the apocalyptic mind frame I’m in, I gave it another go. I remember laughing at most of the key elements of the story and for the most part, they’re still silly. Why build boats when you could build ships to move people into space? Why would you need all those trillions upon trillions of dollars for 5 lifeboats? If not spaceships, why not air ships?
It’s a good film, but I’d like to think it’d be massively different if done by an actual futurist.
