There are factions of the Church that have a great and long tradition of intelligent scientific inquiry and academic whatchacallits. Why, to this day there are serious Jesuit dudes who could kick your ass in terms of scientific knowledge, philosophical understanding, or in debate on pretty much any topic you care to mention.
