Man, I just found out that back in 2012 I had a plugin that was automatically creating thumbnails for video posts over and over again, a few of those posts had over 1500 images associated to them!  can you imagine what that was doing to the archive pages?  I’ve cleaned them all up, so now we get to see if what I did will fix the errors that have been randomly happening for years on end.
