The machine keeps water hot all the time. When you poor in water, the water the last person put in is what goes on the coffee grounds, not the water you just put in. Which means when the pot over flows, it is not the person who “just made the coffee” it is the asshole before them.

Which is why you should never use that damned plastic pitcher – it over fills the machine. Always poor water from another pot. The standard machine has two pots for regular, and one for decaf. Meaning an extra, Use the damned extra pot to fill the machine.
