Specifically, I’d like to know how it performs wirelessly – and if there is video lag or audio out of sync. Steam’s store says “wired network strongly recommended” which seems to defeat the purpose.

Works fine. I had a router that stalled out streaming HD video via Chromecast but once I upgraded both Chromecast and Steam Link work fine across the house. Fun to use the steam controller + tv downstairs to play a few rounds of whatever.
