I stand by my earlier comments on this movie, there’s just too damn much going on in it for the time that they gave it. Another 30 minutes would have done a world of change for the story, or another 20 minutes edited out. I understand that Disney is paying some serious bank for these actors now, and wanted to get their money’s worth, but having Iron Man and Captain America out of their suits for as much as they did….meh. I’m not there to see Robert Downey Jr or Chris Evens, I’m there for the comic books characters that they bring to life so well. It was wall to wall with them too:
- Iron Man
- Captain America
- Thor
- Hulk
- Hawk Eye
- Black Widow
- War Machine
- Maria Hill
- Nick Fury
- Scarlet Witch
- Quicksilver
- Vision
- Ultron
- Baron Strucker
It wasn’t until I was watching the deleted scenes that I even remembers that Strucker had been executed by Ultron, something that was mentioned in a 5 second ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ throw away scene right before they completely misunderstand how the internet works (Nexus? no, just no. there’s no one place that is “the internet”). It was a fun movie and I’m happy to have watched it again, but it’s not going to be one of those comic books films that I watch over and over again like Iron Man 2 or the first Avengers film.
It’s after seeing the volume that they crammed into this film that I see why Whedon’s not going to be directing the next two Avengers films.
