Professor Bernard Quatermass, embodied here by Scottish actor Andrew Keir is a scientist entirely composed of tweed and anger. And the more angry he becomes, the more Scottish he gets. Fascinatingly, the basic concept is the same as 2001: A Space Odyssey, except in the original short story The Sentinel there are no ancient astronauts messing about with early humanity and the course of civilization, but there are in the original tv series by Nigel Kneale, written before The Sentinel grew arms and legs and became something much, much bigger. A coincidence? I think not. Government conspiracies, the supernatural, alien invasion (and an alien autopsy!); no wonder Chris Carter approached Kneale to write for The X Files.
