Despite the several interesting points brought up here, I am going to point out that the issue raised by the metric system, is not only in correct, but the truth is completely opposite.

The Metric system is an system based on the personal whim of a single man, developed by the French to be easy to use. It is the very definition of arbitrary.

The Standard system, uses measurements in common usage at the time, codified into law to ensure consistency. The standard system is biased on tradition; functional use & to the best of my knowledge is the longest non defunct system of measurements.
