Simian escapes from zoos are very, very common. They used to just not talk about it but now covering up a story like that is a lot more difficult. The most dangerous escaped zoo animals you can encounter are chimpanzees and polar bears. Chimps can literally tear you limb from limb if they’re so inclined. They’re like tempestuous small children with the strength of twenty men.
The strange thing I’ve read about many chimp attacks is the ripping off of face and hands….
Strange that those would be the primary things to attack.
I wonder if its some kind of identity thing?
For a primate, another’s face would be the primary feature of identifying a peer, and the hands might be the primary identifier of self….?
Maybe chimps have a similar concept of “higher” vs “lower” animals…..in which case hands and faces are the primary difference between apes and other animals.
Hands and face represent the soul….?
VERY interesting thoughts gropegrope. I like your style. Chimps certainly do have a sense of higher and lower animals. In the infamous sign language experiments, the animals were raised like human beings and identified themselves as such. (when shown pictures of apes and humans and asked to point to themselves they would invariably select the human) When one of these animals was sent to a ‘sanctuary’ (although it sounded more like a hell hole) she was accompanied by her carer. She’d never encountered other chimpanzees before. He signed, “What they?” She replied, “Black bugs.”
The chimps actually quite enjoyed doing the ads, or so I’ve heard. I think they came from a UK zoo, Twycross, and they treated it like a nice couple of days out. Of course we’d balk at this kind of thing now but it was perfectly normal in the seventies. Great still from POTA by the way. I take it you know the famous story about all the actors segregating themselves into their simian groups during food breaks.
😀
It’s starting….
