My memory of the audience reaction to this moment is vivid. TOTAL silence for at least 5 to 10 seconds then a lot of nervous whispering. The shock was palpable. Of course most of the audience members wouldn’t have known that experiments had already been done that proved that chimpanzees can be taught to articulate very simple words (but with enormous difficulty) and use them in context.
A very impactful moment, and the moment that follows, Caesar “rallying the troops”. I would have to admit to being quite gitty watching that scene(even now).
It’s also worth noting that the scene was not spoiled by the film’s marketing. In an age where trailers just reveal way too much, I was shocked that this scene was not spoiled for me before I saw the movie.
I knew he was going to speak. I just didn’t know when. Also, if you knew anything about the POTA mythos, you’d also know what that word would be. (‘Gitty’ – what word did you mean?) The ‘chanting’ scene with the other apes is very funny, largely due to Brian Cox’s reactions. He was definitely playing it for laughs (he loves doing comedy, or at least me and my partner thought so because we were the only people in the place laughing.
I didn’t take it for granted that Caesar would speak in this movie, given that it’s a modern retelling of the mythos, and given that they went to such lengths to make them more ape like. I thought perhaps they would save the speaking for the next movie. The scene was surprising to me and had such an impact on me, because I understood the significance of the word and the moment in the mythos.
I’m as excited about this film as you are about Godzilla.
That is probably true, but this is a close second for me.
😀
