Oh, you didn’t like that comment but decided to keep schtum. But I tell you what, the other men are also ‘tokens’. The show’s been running for years so the producers obviously decided they needed to keep up with a younger demographic.
I agree with you that Tory, Grant, and Kari were likely introduced into the Mythbusters to appeal to a younger demographic, however; I don’t know enough about science or engineering to judge whether they are “tokens” or not.
Furthermore, I guess I just feel that the question of them being tokens or not is less important than the idea that they could reach and inspire a young person to pursue a career in the sciences.
This reminds me of an interview I saw with James Doohan a number of years ago. He was talking about meeting a female fan at one of the Star Trek Conventions. She told him that Scotty had inspired her to go to school and go work for NASA. Doohan was clearly very moved by this, and amazed that he inspired this.
It seems to me Mythbusters has a similar potential.
Of course, the irony isn’t lost on me that I’m making a case for Kari Byron being an inspiration to young scientists dressed in “tighty whities” and a half tank top.
Token woman, but I still like her.
Shame that Scottie left the show, she was much less of a token, actually had some appropriate skills for the job.

Well, I can’t really argue with that can I. Comment busted.

You know that’s a fake pic of Kari?

The pic of Kari is real, the background is fake. I don’t think this one’s shopped though: fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/190/d/f/kari_byron_by_luvfemuscle-d56ltd1.jpg
You can tell by the pectorals.
“We need more women in science!”
“Okay, he’s Kari Byron on Mythbusters.”
“She’s too attractive!”
Feminism: It’s not about women’s rights, it’s about making unattractive women feel better.
