I’ve never understood the big deal about this picture. It’s grinding sparks, I would stand there bare skinned at that distance and let them hit me, let alone worry about 1/4″ high strength steel.
Having worked in that Industry, you do that, right after we see who your Medical Insurance Provider is. We’re not talking a Dremel Tool here, that’s a 7″ Angle Grinder and that Spark Stream will burn through a new pair of Blue Jeans in about 30 Seconds and hitting bare skin for less time time than that will leave you with a permanent reminder. I’m not TOO worried about the Steel Tank, but those reinforced rubber hose won’t last long…
I am in the industry. I have been making a living working pipeline construction for 26 years. I’ve worked every aspect of construction and am currently a bending engineer/tie in foreman. I work around welders every day. I’m 44, and have helped my dad, who was a heavy equipment mechanic, since I was 3. I believe I know a little about welding/cutting/grinding.
I showed the picture to our welder stewart and he got a chuckle and had his helper do a little grinding while I videotaped. We set him up on a 12″ header weld we were going to bevel off and I placed my arm 5′ away (rough guess of the distance from the picture) After a few seconds of grinding I moved to within 3′ and held it in the stream of sparks for about 15 seconds. Guess what? Not a mark, not even any redness. Just some darkening from the metal flakes on the skin.
I know if you move in directly in front of the stream of sparks (inches) it will do some damage, but 3 or more feet away the intensity isn’t bad. Stings a little, but hey, pipelining ain’t for pussies… www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkMEbESO3dM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
