Free mcs+ to anyone that can help me find more information out!
I remember reading a book back about 20 years ago about a nuclear powered submarine that was in deep water when everything went to shit and a nuclear war happened. when they got to the surface all the fighting was done, but they had no clue what was going on.
That’s all I remember from it, other than they were near the panama canal and the canal had been hit with a nuke, creating a blockage that they cleared with a nuclear missile of their own.
I’ve tried googling all these ideas, but all I’m finding is repeated references to “On the Beach”, which was a fine enough novel/movie, but it’s not what I’m thinking of.
help!
You might remember the cover of the book, I’m sure its buried in the back of your brain somewhere. Might wanna try searching for “Post Apocalyptic” novels
* Post nuclear *
spent a couple hours doing just that. check out this massive list: post-apocalyptic.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_apocalyptic_and_post-apocalyptic_fiction
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalyptic_and_post-apocalyptic_fiction
this one series has over 120 books alone, lol: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathlands
There’s The Last Ship, which is 25 years ago.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ship
Submarina surfaces after a nuclear exchange as you said. No Panama Canal — Suez Canal, though.
that’s not it, but I’ve added it to my to read list, lol
OK, then how about Omega Sub by J.D. Cameron, 1991:
On top secret maneuvers beneath the polar ice cap, the USS LIBERATOR surfaces to find the Earth in flames from a global thermonuclear war — a war so complete that they do not know what started it. The crew then begins seeking out survivors to forge a new future.
Winner!
Awesome. Now I can login and take proper credit. And the secret to my success: expert Googling.

Derp. NOW I’ll take credit. It’s the fifth result down under “the nautical fiction list”.
Could it have been The Phoenix Odyssey? www.amazon.com/The-Phoenix-Odyssey-Richard-Henrick/dp/082175016X
ehhhh, i don’t think so. they came up from the water and didn’t have any idea what happened…
Can’t find any info on it but here’s a second recommendation for The Last Ship
omfg i just googled my fat ass off for close to 90 minutes and my advice is to LET IT GO.
quitter
I’ve done a bit of searching Tiki, and I’m afraid the internet searches won’t likely yield a result. You are probably looking at a cheap pulp fiction book of the 1980’s. There were thousands of those books put out during that time, and most all of them are forgotten by almost everyone. There in we find the flaw of the internet. We can only find what we want, when enough people have shared what we are looking for. If it were midget porn then you would find what you are looking for no problem.
Your only hope is to try to remember some more of the book, and then find a reading group online that likes reading these kinds of books, and ask them. With luck you might find someone who remembers the book. Then the impossible task is next if they do. Finding a copy.
Fuck! This reminded me of a movie I’ve never been able to find. 80’s or 90’s, similar storyline. The world ends, but a few people survive. The one I mainly recall is this serviceman happened to be underwater in a pond, breathing thru a reed. World blows up, he comes up for air and everything is gone. All I ever got on searches was the same as Tiki…”On The Beach.”
Sounds exactly like Omega Sub by J.D. Cameron.
It had some zombie esque overtones with the survivors on shore all wearing white shirts. The end of each book gave a glimpse into the future of the crew, but the next book sometimes picked up a bit before the events discussed in the last chapter. They made a bse out of an Atoll or sheltered island of some sort. If any of this sounds familiar I think I may have this one figured.
J.D. Cameron was a nom de plume assigned by the publisher. Michael Jahn may have used it to kick off the story, but the last half of the series was by David Robbins (writing as Cameron) if I remember right. He is a big league pulp writer (Executioner, Doc Savage, Etc) with quite a bit of cred in the field. He also wrote a couple of post apocalyptic fare called Endworld and Blade that were good too.
On the off chance I am right…I decided to register. The description I recall about the panama canal was how the water levels were so different between the two oceans it formed a waterfall after the blast. I also remember there was a second sub that was stalking them, but this may have been in one of the other books.
That’s it all right. Awesome job! Now I have the fun job of trying to track down those books, lol
Good to know all my useless knowledge payed off, lol. I think the panama story was City of Fear. There are six books in the set. The fifth and the sixth were the hardest to track down, but I think you can get them on Amazon for about $4-$5 each. A great set of books!
“Long Voyage Back” or “The Last Ship” is close, but with a ship, not submarine. “Lucifer’s Hammer” and “The Postman” are excellent apocalypse survival adventures.
