1998: CD annoyingly skips sometimes, even on the better portable players, carrying a decent library of music sucks, crap sound from earbuds.

2012: No skips, stores eleventeen bajillion tracks, great sound quality (assuming that the giant headphones aren’t flashy-looking junk).

Looks like it’s headed in the right direction.
