Build over 5000 years ago before Stonehenge and the Pyramids by either Druids, Smurfs or Hobbits not sure which.
As the sun rises on the Winter Solstice a beam of light shines through a small portal above the door
and travels along the main passage dramatically illuminating the chamber at the back of the tomb.
One theroy is that it may have represented a powerful symbol of the victory of life over death and marking the beginning of the new year.
Some even suggest the symbolism of Father Sky penetrating Mother Earth and giving birth to the new year.
You get the idea …shaft of light, long tight passage, explosion of light deep in the chamber, ehem … not the Smurfs then!
Of course if it’s a typical Irish day, expect rain and clouds!

“Geeeee, you think they had clouds back then???”
Ah Newgrange, such a nice place to visit, was there for the solstice once or twice, fantastic thing to see
Is that a hobbit in the entrance?
