All the cartoons back then were just half-hour long ads for toys, the merchandising was where the money was. That’s how the Transformers got started, too – somebody developed the toys and them wrote a cartoon strip for them.

I guess it was designed as manufacturable toy merchandise first and a practical cartoon vehicle second.

I think He-man was fined or publicly criticized for being basically just a 20 minute ad for the toy line. I thought it was bad-ass though.
