This April, The Avengers and the X-Men—the two most popular franchises in comics history—go to war! Marvel is proud to announce AVENGERS VS X-MEN, a landmark 12-issue pop culture event bringing together the world’s greatest super heroes—Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto and more—for an unforgettable battle beginning in April 2012.
would the Avengers even have a fighting chance? The x-men have people that can alter reality, right?

My ex-wife could confuse and obscure reality.
Maybe she could be the Avengers secret weapon.
Of course the Avengers have a fighting chance. Thor is a God, that means that he alone is probably enough to defeat the X-MEN. Captain America is a genetically enhanced super soldier, The Hulk is an unstoppable biological weapon, and Iron Man is a genius who would likely come up with weapons that are effective against all kinds of Mutants.
This is not to say the X-MEN don’t have some awesome stuff going on, but I mean, what is wolverine going to do to Hulk? What is Storm going to do to Thor, what is cyclops (the slow moving bastard) going to do against Iron Man or Captain America? Honestly, Magneto and the Prof. are the only real threats to the Avengers. Even so, Magneto gets demolished by Hulk, or even Thor whose Hammer cannot be moved or manipulated by anyone save him, and my guess is that if Magneto’s fancy helmet can block out the Prof., then so can an Asgardian helm worn by Thor.
You can argue either side as much as you want in the end who fights who and who wins is going to be determined by where they want the plot to go. And it really doesn’t matter if one should have beaten the other even the most powerful can be defeated by random luck. How many times has Thor been knocked out by something he shouldn’t even have felt.
That having been said also remember that years ago in Marvel versus DC Storm considered Wonder Woman with Thor’s Hammer (which means his power) an even match. Wolverine and Hulk fight a lot and the Hulk doesn’t always win, although the fact that Wovlerine isn’t strong enough to push his claws through Hulks skin puts him at a major disadvantage. Cyclops may move slower but he has a lot of practice shooting things that move fast. And Thor’s hammer can be used by anyone pure of heart not just him.
Like you said, it can go wherever the writers want, because everyone likes a twist. So I think it will end in a draw or some stupid truce. Straight up though, in an all out battle, I think Thor, Hulk, and the Avengers would have this one in the bag. It is an obvious mismatch, so they will have to use some luck, or underhandedness honestly. While Thor’s hammer may be used temporarily by anyone pure of heart, it is supposed to be rare that people are pure of heart, and then even more rare that Thor is knocked out not holding Mjolnir. Either way, COULD be a decent comic, but I doubt it will be.
Actually, she refused to use the hammer. So she fought without his power. Storm controls weather. Thor can take it away.
Thor’s hammer can only be lifted by those judged worthy by Odin. The criteria is unknown as to what Odin considers worthy, and I think he changes the rules from time to time. Cap has lifted it on at least two occassions I know of. Superman had it once during a fight, but was unable to lift it once the fight was over. Wonder Woman lifted it, and refused to use such an unfair advantage in the fight with storm, so she left where she found it.
Beta Ray Bill used it, and has his own now. Eric Masterson was Thor for a while, and tried to get the hammer back from Thor when he felt he needed the power to help people on earth, This resulted in Odin making him a mace and thus Thunderstrike.
There’s all sorts of alt realities and futures where Thor’s kids have the hammer, Thor is evil but still has the hammer, etc.
Magneto is more powerful then Storm, and less likely to hold back, making him the real threat on the team. Add to it that Colossus now has the power of the Juggernaut, and the X-men have some heavy hitters who may not hold back.
The thing with Thor and Hulk is that you almost never see their full power.
So, it’s Civil War 2.0, eh?
Scarlet Witch is the only one I know of who can alter reality, and she was an Avenger. Currently she’s nuts. I think she’s the reason behind the fight.
It’s going to be interesting to see who switches sides. I’m thinking Wolverine & Namor might trade spots.
Batman is going to win.
Eh. This probably won’t leave a lasting impression on the Marvel universe anyways.
Someone dies? Maybe, but they will be revived soon enough.
At least Civil War had a plausible reason for all of those people to fight, this feels more like a cross-over (DC vs Marvel) kind of thing.
First of all, the actual lineup has not been announced, so we can only speculate.
Thor is currently dead.
Iron Man in a fight involving Magneto? Yeah, how’s that workin for ya.
We aren’t talking Hulk, it’s Thunderbolt Ross as Rulk (red hulk) and he is more powerful than Hulk.
The Avengers have no members with mental powers. That’s gonna be a big problem.
Colossus now has the gem of Cyttorak, which makes him the Juggernaut. Another big problem.
What the fuck are Wolverine and Beast going to do? They’re on both teams!
Madness.
I’m sure glad that there’s someone here that is reading comics 🙂 Yup I’m pretty sure the lineup hasn’t been announced but so far everyone knows that Wolverine will be in the Avengers, haven’t read Schism yet and I bet Wolvie and Cykes haven’t set aside their differences which is probably why he is in the Avengers 🙂
False. Wolverine IS in the X-men. Just not Cyclops’s X-men?
Why do to teams for good go against each other? I don’t see why this would even happen.
