I think the problem is that the punchline is the wrong way around – it should be “You cry when you chop up an onion”, because it leaves you to interpret what that means, and then it’s funny. Whereas this way, the darker interpretation of the punchline is just given to you with no subtly.

Well, that’s just my opinion anyway.
