In 1988 I caught a chopper ride to this oil rig courtesy of Ed Taras of Canadian Hunter. The sound this blazing rig fire was making was louder than standing next to a jet engine, and the hellish heat wouldn’t let me get any closer. The sensory overload was so intense I never saw the four firefighters walking next to the rig until I received the prints back from the developer. I think I took the photo with my first SLR, an old Yashica 35mm camera and Kodak 400 asa film. I sold one of the photos from this series under the table to a photographer from the Alaska Highway Daily news.
