You have lives in minecraft?
Yes, there are a number of monsters in Minecraft that would happily eat you, or blow you up.
Mushrooms can be used to make a mushroom stew, that helps replenish lost life.
When you die you drop everything you’re carrying and return to the spawn point. (Or your bed, if you made one.)
This happens sometimes; when a particular biome spawns, so do the cave below it. And sometimes it takes a long time to find that part of the cave the mushrooms are in, so they spread and grow in the darkness. It’s happened to me a few times!
I often come across vast fields of mushrooms. I react by slowly backing out of the room, hoping I do not disturb them.

Also, since 1.7 or so Notch has implemented mushroom “reproduction” whereby blocks with a light level below X (I don’t know the number off the top of my head) with mushrooms on the adjacent adjacent block can spawn mushrooms. Leave this undisturbed for long enough and the whole cave will be filled.
