Named after Commodore George Anson, who, back in the 18th century, sailed from England with 5 ships and 1,900 men into the Pacific to capture a galleon full of gold from Manila, in the Philippines.
5 years later he arrived home with 1 ship, 400 men and the gold. Awesome story. He was also, at one time, governor of Charleston when the British were there. A suburb ‘Ansonborough’ is also named after him. End of history lesson.
1500 men think he was a dick.
I live about 5 miles from this street.
Heh, it looks like the german word “ansonst,” meaning, “otherwise.”
