One thing I never understood about Star Trek TNG is why the character was written as a frenchman is being played by a englishman with no hint of a french accent. He does still have the english accent. That always bothered me.
It seems once he was cast for the part the writers could have written the part as a englishman so it would make more sense.

It’s payback for Highlander, A French actor playing a Scotsman, so a Scottish actor playing a Frenchman and to add insult with an English accent.
