Because BP just loves to drill holes in the gulf of mexico and unleash millions of dollars worth of their main product, risking fines and potentially destroying an entire ecosystem for the sheer hell of it? Because BP loves to destroy multi-million dollar hardware and risk inciting another ban on offshore oil drilling?
Please. I hate big oil as much as anyone else but let’s be realistic here.
It’s all over the news that the obama administration was on the job ‘right from day 1’. Good thing too, or this oil slick might of gotten really BIG !! Oh wait, it IS really big.
The best part in all of this is they started having problems weeks ago and BP did nothing about it then. The rig was going down for over a week before it “exploded” and killed everyone but one person. Now there is some cockamamie “fix” being fabricated that will funnel the oil.
the BP platform was drilling for what they call deep oil. They go out where the ocean is about 5,000 feet deep and drill another 30,000 feet into the crust of the earth. This is right on the edge of what human technology can do. This time they hit a pocket of oil at such high pressure that it burst every safety valve all the way up to the surface thus causing the rig to explode and sink. Flat out this was a true accident. BP was using the pinnacle of oil drilling technology and it wasn’t enough to prevent this from happening. It’s not the governments fault, it’s not BP’s fault. It was an accident.
Reminds me of The 1969 Santa Monica oil spill, when a rig 50 miles offshore had a blowout fouling up 30 miles of SoCal beaches. That was the end of offshore oil drilling in California, despite the massive reserves.
Accidents and fault are not mutually exclusive concepts. There’s the whole idea of negligence. This event is the very reason why some people oppose offshore drilling in the first place. Especially when we’re pushing the limits to exploit a well like this one.
I can’t even conceive of what the long term effects of this will be, but it’s going to dwarf Valdez by several magnitudes. How the hell do you clean oil out of marshlands? Louisiana is still trying to fully recover from Katrina, and this is going to destroy their economy. On top of that, anything that gets shipped along the Mississippi is going to skyrocket in price. Shrimp already went up 2$, and that’s on the wholesale end. All this, and we’re still in the ‘figuring out what the hell to do about it’ phase. The actual solution could take months to years to execute, with this well pumping out 200,000 gallons a day in the meantime.
“It wasn’t our accident, but we are absolutely responsible for the oil, for cleaning it up, and that’s what we intend to do,” BP Group CEO Tony Hayward told NBC’s “TODAY” show.
Transocean is to blame so they say.
“What has failed here is the ultimate safety device on a drilling rig,” he said. “There are many barriers of protection that you have to go to before you get to this. It isn’t designed to not fail.”
This is seriously fucking up my Southern Louisiana experience. Last time BP was blowing up refineries in Houston and now this shit.
Oh and now I’m going to have to pay top dollar for decent sea food or buy the chinease garbage which fucking sucks and tastes like rubber.
Also all the fucking fishing this summer is ruined, not to mention thousands of fishermen are out of the job right when the season opened up. They were just BLESSING THE FLEET last weekend too.
This would not have happened if Obama did not order FEMA to blow up the levees.
Oh man, where to begin?
THAT’S ALOTTA OIL!
VENICE IS IN UROP LOL
WE CAN GET OUT OF IRAQ NOW LULZ
We can has HFC-powered vehicles naow?
Man, you guys are fucked.
Goodbye sea life in that area. So much for the fishing/crab boom Louisiana had after Katrina.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Can we be like China and execute all the CEOs of the companies involved in this fuck-up? I heard Halliburton is involved.
Of course it was.
Also, the Chairman of British Petroleum is on the board of Goldman Sachs.

Yeah, Obama should have been on the job on day -2000, when he could have demanded backup shutoff valves that could be activated by remote.
You’re right. Obama should use some of his magic negro powers to make it all go away!
bella venezia?
dio mio!
Sonofa… anyone got a big wet/dry vac?
ShamWows are currently being deployed by the Coast Guard as we speak.
Ah. They had better be the heavy duty size…
Where are they gonna squeeze the liquid to though?
I’m sure they have oil tankers, with giant wringers attached, enroute…
At least the boats don’t need to worry about fuel – just skim it off the surface as they go along. 😀

Of course, they only had a license to drill down 20,000 feet. Silly government regulations….
