I live about 15 minutes from Harpers Ferry and the do a re-enactment every year. It’s hard to tell if more people go because he was an abolitionist or to celebrate his failure.
Perosnally, I would go to venerate the event and the men involved. They were doing it, if poorly, for a noble cause. I just finished the Flashman book about his raid, and even though it’s historical fiction, I learned a lot about it, and just wow.
